BREAKING: The vote that was scheduled to take place on Wednesday morning, November 5 has been cancelled for now. Stay tuned to the Only In Miami Show for updates as they become available.
ORIGINAL STORY: The SkyRise Miami project has been a controversial topic in Miami politics since it was first proposed. In August, voters approved leasing waterfront real estate adjacent to Bayside Marketplace to developers to construct the observation tower. However, while the lease was billed as being funded entirely with private funds, it has since come to light that the developers are seeking 9 million in county funds to help cover infrastructure construction costs. The funds would come from the Building Better Communities bond initiative passed in 2004 which provided for increased property taxes to fund construction projects “in the public interest.” Miami-Dade mayor Carlos Jimenez recently announced his support for funding for the SkyRise project as well as the Miami Wilds project, a theme park proposed to be built on county-owned land adjacent to Zoo Miami. The Miami-Dade County Commission will hold a hearing and vote on the funding application for SkyRise and other projects on Wednesday, November 5 at 10:00am in the Government Center commission chamber. Residents will be given an opportunity to present their thoughts about the funding proposals at that time.
