On Monday, the Only In Miami Show interviewed Dr. Charles U. Phillips, who was the first African-American Fire Chief in Miami-Dade County. Dr. Phillips talked about growing up in Miami and about the difficulties he faced being a part of the first integrated class at the Fire Academy. Though he originally planned to work for the fire department only long enough to save money for school, due to the attitudes he encountered in the fire service, he resolved to make changes to the culture in the department. He rose through the ranks, and in 2010, he became the first African-American to lead the fire service for Miami-Dade County. He will be appearing on November 22 at the Miami-Dade Book Fair – check out his website at charlesuphillips.com.
